September Family Bike Happenings

The weather is beautiful so get out there and ride! Here is our round up of bike and bike-adjacent events this September. Note we are meeting at the 38th Avenue Park this month due to an event at Driskell.

  • Sunday, September 21: Meet at 10am for our regular monthly ride. We have a new meeting place for our monthly ride, 38th Avenue Park, to avoid the crowds at the Hyattsville Cyclecross (CX) event.

  • Bonus ride! Later that same day, kids 8 and under can join the Lil Belgians CX mini-course at noon. Register on the regular CX event page. The kids event is free. The website says ages 8 and under and does not specify a minimum age. I've seen kids with balance bikes there! They separate the kids by age, so your 3 year old on a balance bike will not be riding the course at the same time as an 8 year old mountain biker.

  • Saturday, September 27: Bike to the free Latinas in Aviation Global Festival at the College Park Aviation Museum. This is not a bike-specific event, but I included it because the ride from Hyattsville to the museum is lovely. You can either take the Trolley Trail or NW Branch Trail. • Sunday, September 28: DC Family Bike Fest. My kids love going to the "bike party." Here are my best pro-tips for enjoying DMV's biggest family bike gathering.

    • Bring a picnic blanket. The tables and benches get snatched up quickly.

    • It can get crowded, especially the playground, so be prepared. I was glad my kids decided to sport their reflective vests, because it made it easier to keep track of them!

    • Search for the event on social media. There will be raffles, a kids bike parade, and lots of other fun stuff, and some of it won't be posted on the event's main page.

    • We hope to have a group ride from Hyattsville to the Alethia Tanner Park, the event site. Stay tuned!
